Keeping the cat in Spain

Blogger Daria Santo (@dariasanto) shares personal experience: how to transport the animal to Spain by plane, how much the cat being scared costs and why it is easier to keep a cat than a dog.

Daria Santo moved to Spain in 2015. She lives in Marbella, in southern Spain, with her husband, little son and a cat. Bengal cat Elsa is three years old. Like her owner, she was born in Russia.

We acquired the cat 1,5 years after my relocation, – tells Daria. – We took Elsa in Russia, the cat was vaccinated and chipped also there. Actually, there was a confusion with the cat’s international passport. We bought two cats simultaneously, for one of my friends and for me. The cats were chipped. And it happened that the passports were mixed up after the procedure. We found out the mistake only in Spain. The veterinary service offered us to make a new passport and re-microchip our pet.

We transported our cat by plane. I would highly recommend the owners of the pets to study Rules for Pets Transportation. They may differ in different airlines.

In Spain, veterinary clinics are here and there. We are lucky as there is one in our apartment complex. It is very convenient. We vaccinate Elsa every year; specialists from the clinic remind us about this.

Once the cat fell from the terrace, 8 floors high. She broke the windshield of the car… It was midnight when we found her. We took her to the veterinary clinic, did an ultrasound scan, an X-ray, put in an IV, left her in hospital overnight. The cat had the only scratch and was scared. We paid 700 € and brought her home. Before buying the cat we put wire-frame nets on the windows for her safety, nets were supposed to keep her in and not to allow her to fall down. We paid 1500 € for the nets. The cat is not a cheap matter.

I can’t say that there are any special requirements for keeping an animal in the house. However, keeping a cat is easier than, for example, dogs. If a dog whines at home and neighbors complain, the owner will be fined. Moreover, the dog will be taken away.
